The Reeths-Puffer baseball team has battled through a difficult schedule so far this spring to remain a competitive force in the O-K Green Conference.
This past weekend, the Rockets knocked off Oakridge (4-2) in the quarterfinal round of the GMAA city tournament and nearly defeated North Muskegon in the semifinals before falling by a narrow 5-3 margin.
One of the key contributors for Reeths-Puffer so far this season has been junior Jack Yonkman, who has emerged as a quality arm in the Rockets’ pitching rotation as well as a defensive standout from his centerfield position.
Heading into the GMAA tournament, Yonkman held a perfect 0.00 ERA with 12 strikeouts and only four walks allowed in 9.2 innings from the mound.
Unfortunately for Yonkman, he suffered a shoulder injury and will miss the next few weeks of action but he hopes to return by the time the district tournament starts on May 30-31. Despite hitting the injured list, his impact on the team was evident to his teammates and coach.
“Jack is one of the top defensive center fielders in the area and him being out of the lineup will be a big hit to our defense, as well as trying to to fill that number three slot in the batting order, ” said Reeths-Puffer head coach Butch Attig. “Jack is a team-first player which shows in all he does on and off the field. Getting Jack back healthy is a major piece for this team to achieve our goal of making a run at a district crown.”
The readers of MLive and the Muskegon Chronicle also recognized Yonkman’s impact on the diamond this spring, as they voted him the top junior spring sports athlete from the Muskegon area.
Yonkman finished with more than 16,000 votes to take top honors in this week’s poll, while Grant baseball standout Austin Tyers finished runner-up with more than 7,000 votes.
Grant baseball standout Rory Fish finished third overall in the fan vote, while Reeths-Puffer girls soccer standout Abby Hill and Ashley Bradley rounded out the top 5 vote-getters in our junior class showcase.
