Tornado damage will impact some SLPS schools prep sports programs

ST. LOUIS—In the wake of the May 16 tornado that damaged thousands of buildings across the city of St. Louis alone, including several Saint Louis Public School buildings, district administrators have already decided that several will not reopen in time for the fall semester.

Officials have a little more than two months left to figure out how the decision to move high school students from Soldan to Gateway STEM, and students from Sumner to Clyde C. Miller Career Academy High School will impact the next high school sports season.

For several years, Soldan and Sumner have shared a football team under a cooperative agreement approved by the Missouri State High School Activities Association. Miller and Vashon have done the same. It’s unclear if that would continue or if new cooperatives would be forged. MSHSAA by-laws allow three high schools to join together, as long as the combined enrollments don’t exceed the capacity for the sport.

Three-school cooperative squads would be allowed for team sports with a standard line up of 8 or more players. All other sports, including individual ones, would be limited to two schools.

The fall sports practice season opens August 11. MSHSAA by-laws give schools until the second week of a season’s practices to work out a co-op plan.
