Law enforcement and health officials work to reduce gun violence

KINGSFORD, Mich. (WLUC) - Officials in Lansing are working to reduce one of the nation’s most common dangers: firearm injuries.

According to Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services, gun violence is the leading cause of death in Michigan teens and children, aged 19 and younger.

“Firearm injuries are preventable, and everyone has a role to play in preventing these tragedies,” MDHHS Chief Medical Executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian said. “Gun violence is a public health crisis that affects the well-being and safety of all Michigan residents, which is why Michigan is taking a strong public health approach to addressing this issue.”

One of the strategies is offering free gun locks, like the ones available at Kingsford Public Safety.

Kingsford Public Safety Officer Jonathan Cvengros says the locks are available to anyone.

“I wouldn’t deny anybody a gun lock if they asked,” Cvengros said. “We don’t ask for people’s address if they come in, if they are asking for a gun lock because they want to make a gun safe, then we’re going to give it to them.”

Cvengros demonstrated how to apply the lock on one of the station’s firearms.

He takes the gun lock’s wire and pulls it through the empty magazine well and out of the gun’s ejection port.

The wire, once clipped into the lock, will prevent bullets from being loaded.

Cvengros says any adult could be charged with up to 15 years in prison if a child were to harm someone with a gun.

“It doesn’t just apply to parents, it applies to anyone who goes anywhere they know a minor could be, and then leaves a gun or firearm available to a child,” Cvengros said.

Michigan law requires gun owners to lock their firearms, or store guns in a safe when not in use.
