MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile joined thousands of cities in a stylish on-road motorcycle fundraiser or men’s health awareness.
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is a worldwide charity event where riders raise money to support men’s mental health and prostate cancer research. The ride also supports Movember, a leading charity focused on men’s mental health.
Motorcycle enthusiasts dressed in their finest ‘dapper’ attire gathered in Mobile to support the cause.
“I just think people need to be more aware about it all honestly,” said rider James Clark. “Because I mean, men, we don’t really get the recognition we deserve when it comes to that part of our lives cause we’re supposed to be the strong ones.”
The group of riders met at Rosie’s 1901 on Halls Mill Road before taking backroads to Fairhope and picking up other riders along the way. Both men and women wore vintage style attire and united in a parade of classic-inspired motorcycles.
“These sort of group activities that we get to do with our buddies, our shared passions, it’s such a noble thing that we’re doing, riding for people,” said Kenny Willliams. “It’s a great activity that we do and I think it has a lot of value for the community.”
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men in the U.S. Riders say talking more about prostate cancer can help prevent it and get early treatment and bringing attention to men’s mental health is also important.
“Always check on your health,” said Williams. “Make sure you’re getting your physicals every year, make sure you’re taking care of yourself…spiritually, mentally and physically.”
“Check with those men out there and make sure they’re taking care of themselves,” said another rider John Waddell.
“It’s good that people understand that we’re people like everybody else,” said Clark.
