Video: Seal pup being nurtured back to health after found staving on Washington beach

A harbor seal pup is recovering after being found alone and starving on a beach in Des Moines, Washington. The pup was discovered earlier this week, prompting immediate action from a local rehabilitation center. The seal pup, approximately two weeks old, was severely underweight and without her mother when she was found. Precautions were taken to ensure the mother was not returning before the pup was approached."They monitored her to make sure that Mom wasn't coming back," Casey Mclean, executive director of SeaLife Response, told KOMO's Joel Moreno.Currently, the pup is being cared for at the SeaLife Response, Rehabilitation and Research Facility in Des Moines, Washington. There, she receives four to five meals a day. During feeding, the team carries the pup to a pool, where she instinctively calls out for her mother, who is no longer present. Pups are sometimes abandoned when their mothers are frightened away by humans or pets. The staff limit their contact with the pup to ensure she does not associate humans. That's because, once she is healthy enough, she will be returned to the wild. See more in the video player above.
