The Golden State Valkyries made history in their WNBA debut on Friday, delivering a landmark moment for the league, even if it came with a loss.
The Valkyries are the first expansion team to join the WNBA since the Atlanta Dream entered the league in 2008. Backed by a wave of support, the team launched with over 10,000 season-ticket holders.

Their inaugural game at Chase Center drew a sellout crowd of 18,064 fans, setting a new attendance record for a team making its debut.
"18,064 of our closest friends. We (love) you Valks Fam," the team posted on social media.
While the energy was electric, the final score didn’t go Golden State’s way. The Valkyries were unable to contain Los Angeles Sparks newcomer Kelsey Plum, who erupted for 37 points in her debut, leading the Sparks to victory.

However, many see a bright future for the Valkyries, including Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr.
“I couldn’t be more excited,” Kerr said before the matchup. “I think watching everything unfold over the last year, year and a half since the franchise was formed, it’s been incredible to watch. I think the branding has been amazing, the name, the colors, just kind of the unveiling of the team. ... This is just an incredible story. We have a lot of people here in this building who deserve a lot of credit for what’s about to unfold, so a lot of fun.”
The Valkyries try to get their first win when they host the Washington Mystics on Wednesday.
