LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The CEO of UofL Health is stepping down.
Tom Miller is resigning "effective immediately," according to a statement from a UofL Health spokesperson Tuesday afternoon.
Miller was named the first CEO of UofL Health in January 2019.
"Tom (Miller) led the organization through unprecedented growth to become a $2.7 billion health care organization and Louisville's third-largest employer," UofL Health said in Tuesday's statement. "The UofL Health Board extends its appreciation to Tom (Miller) for the system's strong position in the community."
No reason was given for Miller's resignation.
The UofL Health system includes the University of Louisville Hospital, the James Graham Brown Cancer Center and more than 110 clinics and practices.
According to the university, Miller was previously the president and CEO of Quorum Health in Nashville and brought 30 years of experience in health care to his role at UofL Health.
"My favorite things about UofL Health are our commitment to teaching, community focus, quaternary provider of care and the strong academic focus we hold as a system," Miller said in his biography on the UofL Health website.
The UofL Health Board will name an interim CEO "in the coming days."
Miller's resignation comes as UofL Health constructs a $144 million expansion to its downtown Louisville hospital. The expansion will add 98 beds to the seven-story "West Tower," bringing the total number of beds available for the hospital to more than 500.
The project was announced in June 2022. UofL Health said at the time the expansion and upgrades will increase "the hospital's operating capacity and facilitate a phased modernization" and allow the hospital to treat more patients while reducing wait times.
In early May, crews broke ground on a new UofL Health Brown Cancer Center facility in Bullitt County. The $25 million regional cancer center will serve an estimated 15,000 patients across the area. It's being constructed on the border of Hillview and Shepherdsville, next to the recently opened UofL South Hospital. It's expected to open in the second half of 2026.
Last November, UofL Health unveiled a $6.6 million behavioral health unit at Mary & Elizabeth Hospital in south Louisville. Leaders said the renovation would increase access to inpatient medical behavioral health services. The new unit offers a wide range of services for treating patients who have psychiatric disorders and medical disorders. Those who have been given diagnoses such as bipolar disease, psychosis, depression and schizophrenia will also be able to receive treatment at the new unit.
Also at Mary & Elizabeth, UofL Health announced an expansion the Frazier Rehab Institute's outpatient pediatric program last October, thanks to a grant from Kosair for Kids.
