Flint Metro League Championship

The Flint Metro League competed in unfavorable conditions over the course of two days to see which school would be crowned the FML Tournament champion.

Flushing came into the meet unbeaten in the league at 9-0 while Clio followed closely behind at 7-1-1.

When it was all said and done, both schools remained in their positions as Flushing took first with 15 points and Clio earned second with 12.

Goodrich finished third with nine points while Flint Kearsley, Fenton, and Owosso scored six and Ortonville Brandon, Holly, and Swartz Creek had five. Corunna had four points to finish in last.

The Raiders took the top spot behind a pair of league titles from its flight 2 and flight 3 doubles.

Senior Tara Fleury and junior Laiken Lindstrom (flight 2 doubles) and sophomores Grace Hebeler and Bridget Preston (flight 3 doubles) did not drop a single set as both pairings were crowned league champions.

The Raiders also added a trio of league runners-up in the singles bracket as junior Keira Dumas-Knieper (flight 1 singles), senior Hanna Allam (flight 2 singles), and sophomore Chandler Davis (flight 3 singles) all reaching the championship match.

Saginaw Valley League Championship

The Grand Blanc Bobcats went into Wednesday’s SVL Championship match with its eyes set on winning back-to-back league titles.

Headlined by four Bobcats finishing in the top ten, Grand Blanc achieved its goal at The Fortress in Frankenmuth.

Landon Guenther and Stefan Baier finished tied for third with a 78 while Braeden Hoover and Ben Thompson tied for sixth with a 79 to lead Grand Blanc. The Bobcats (314) finished eight strokes ahead of second-place Davison (322).

Jay Morris paced the Cardinals with a 76, finishing tied for first with Midland’s Ben Groulx. Max Morris finished tied for sixth with a 79 to round out the scoring for Davison.

Other top performers from the Flint area were Lapeer’s Caiden Ocampo (12th) and Flint Powers Catholic’s James Dean (19th).

Girls Soccer (Districts)

Flint Kearsley 1, Swartz Creek 0 (SO): Kearsley’s Bella Talaski got to play hero on both sides of the field to help the Hornets advance in districts.

After ending double overtime tied at 0-0, Kearsley and Swartz Creek remained tied at 2-2 following the final round of penalty kicks. Mia Granados and Taylor Canamore both netted one for Kearsley.

Talaski decided she was tired of having to make saves, so she shot a goal past the left side of Swartz Creek’s goalkeeper before making a diving stop on the ensuing Swartz Creek shot to seal the win for the Hornets.

Kearsley will face Bay City John Glenn next on May 27 at Bay City John Glenn High School.

Holly 9, Saginaw United 0: Bailey Allen collected a hat trick while Alexis Lindley, Piper Johnson, Rylee Turner, and Devon Byrne each added a score. Ciara Liddle tallied two goals in the win for the Bronchos.

Holly will face the winner of Lake Fenton/Waterford Kettering on May 28 at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s High School.
