Dapper UP bikers ride in Marquette to raise men’s health awareness

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Yooper bikers swapped the leather for a suit and tie to support men’s health on Sunday.

Motorcyclists toured the streets for Marquette’s first Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. The global effort raises funds for health concerns like prostate cancer and suicide.

“I think men’s health issues kind of get lost a little bit because men aren’t as open to talking about their health issues, so this brings awareness to that, that we can talk about these things,” said Mav McAdam, an event co-organizer.

McAdam hopes to generate awareness and attention.

According to the CDC, 80% of people who die by suicide are men. Through vintage bikes and fancy suits, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride encourages discussion about men’s health while having fun and building community support.

“My dad is here with me,” said Eric Malmsten, another event organizer. “He’s 78 years old and still riding the motorcycle he bought back in the mid-70s, so that’s kinda fun to spend time with him and other friends that have come up.”

Malmsten’s grandfather died of Alzheimer’s. He also has a friend fighting memory issues. Malmsten says they dressed up to fight stereotypes and show that motorcyclists can do good.

Attendee Greg Britton says to be healthy, you need both mental and physical wellness.

“I’ve been lucky, but for other guys that aren’t so lucky, they need funding,” Britton said. “Just riding, and it’s been a lot of fun. It fulfills.”

Britton hopes to see even more bikes and people next year. The ride raised $850 for men’s mental health initiatives as of Sunday morning.
