Ann Arbor-area sports: Skyline baseball makes statement with SEC-Red title

7 hours ago 3

Its clear Ann Arbor Skyline’s baseball team has no problems earning its respect on the field.

The Eagles may not have entered their series against Saline with the SEC-Red title on the line as a ranked team, but they made a statement by winning the series to claim the league title.

In the end, Skyline edge Saline 4-2 on Thursday win the conference championship outright, despite finishing tied with Saline and Dexter at 16-5 in SEC-Red competition.

Skyline captured the league title via a tiebreaker as it won both series against Saline and Dexter.

The Eagles split their doubleheader with Saline on Monday leaving the single game as the deciding factor.

Skyline led 4-0 on Wednesday before the game was delayed due to weather, but the Eagles held onto that lead when play resumed Thursday to capture the crown.

Saline outhit Skyline in the third game, but the Eagles built enough of a cushion early to stave off the Hornets and end their bid at three straight league titles.

Skyline’s Caleb Raymond and Oliver Myler each had a hit and drove in a run, while Jack Kidle struck out four batters and Nehith Kumar struck out three batters to aid in the win.

Johnny Arvai drove in one run for the Saline and Devin Lilley led the team with two hits.

Even after this week’s clash, Saline and Skyline could meet again in the district semifinals — if the Eagles get past Pioneer in the district opener next Tuesday.
